Thirumalai Chemicals Ltd. (Mumbai, India) announced that its affiliate, TCL Specialties LLC USA, has commenced pre-commissioning and startup activities at its new maleic anhydride (MA) manufacturing facility at New Martinsville, West Virginia, as per Chemweek.
The company expects to bring part of the unit online by the end of this year, with the startup and stabilization of the remaining units scheduled progressively through the first half of 2026.
The plant will feature a production capacity of 30,000 metric tons per year for malic and fumaric acids, both widely used as food ingredients, and a 40,000 metric tons per year unit dedicated to MA production.
The facility will use n-butane as its sole feedstock, leveraging its location in the Marcellus-Utica shale region, which provides a significant supply advantage.
According to the company, MA produced at the facility will serve a diverse range of applications, including high-strength low-weight composites for the housing, automotive, transport, recreational, infrastructure and energy sectors. It is also used in water treatment materials, coatings, additives, lubricants, high-performance polymers, and a variety of specialty and functional products.
TCL highlighted the growing use of MA in biodegradable polymers for daily-use applications, a segment expected to see dramatic demand growth.
The New Martinsville facility is positioned to address the needs of MA customers in the Northeastern and Midwestern US, as well as other regional markets that are currently underserved.
On the food ingredients side, the plant will produce malic and fumaric acids used in snack foods, candies, beverages, preserves, food processing, and other key applications. These acids are naturally occurring in the human and animal body and are essential for energy conversion from food, the company said. The facility will primarily serve customers in North America, with additional supply to Latin American and EU markets. Currently, only 25% of these essential food ingredients are produced domestically in the US, the company added.
